Gordon wants to close book on Celtic spitting row

HEARTS goalkeeper Craig Gordon today declined a personal apology from the Celtic fan who spat at him during Sunday’s ill-tempered clash at Tynecastle.

Celtic have suspended the season ticket of a supporter who owned up and offered to apologise to Gordon in person - but the Gorgie star has told Parkhead chiefs not to bother as he doesn’t see the point.

His agent George Wright said: "If Celtic have done all the background checks and taken action, Craig doesn’t see any need for the man to apologise to him in person. Craig wasn’t really aware of what happened at the time and accepts the man may have acted out-of-character.

"He is happy with the way things have been dealt with and sees no reason to drag it out.

"If the fellow has apologised, that’s fine. Things happen in the heat of a match."

Gordon’s stance emerged as it was revealed Hearts and Celtic will escape disciplinary action from the SFA following a match which also saw coins thrown at Hoops stars Rab Douglas and Chris Sutton. A total of 27 fans were thrown out of Tynecastle during the game but today the SFA revealed referee Kenny Clark hadn’t mentioned either the coin-throwing or spitting incidents in his report, mentioning only the ten yellow cards he showed.

Drew Herbertson, head of the SFA’s disciplinary department, said: "We have received the misconduct report and all that was mentioned was the cautions so there will be no action taken by the SFA."
