Dundee game called off as snow flurries hit Dens

DUNDEE’S Premierleague clash with Hearts, scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed due to a frozen pitch, writes Alasdair Lawrie.

The Dens Park club usually have covers in place to protect the playing surface but an unexpected snow shower on Hogmanay has left the ground unplayable.

"The pitch is frozen with a few inches of snow on it. It is definitely unplayable," Dundee manager Jim Duffy conceded yesterday.

Clubs in the lower divisions, meanwhile, are keeping an eye on the weather today. The Scottish Football League has referees on standby by to make early-morning inspections after fears of overnight frost.

Alex Smith has already been disrupted by the weather this year. The Ross County boss was trapped in snowdrifts on the A9 when driving to Stirling on Hogmanay. "I was told by the police at Dalwinnie the road was unsafe and we were all sent to a local hotel," said Smith. "But it was an amazing way to welcome the New Year."
