Wales woe for Jambos

PAUL KIDDIE

HEARTS star Gary Wales is at the centre of a fresh injury scare, the striker fearing he has suffered a second broken foot, the Evening News can reveal.

The front man has been battling back to fitness after being sidelined by a stress fracture in the summer but he was due to enter hospital today for scans amid concerns he has suffered a similar injury to his other foot.

Wales was sent home from his club’s pre-season tour of Northern Ireland in July and had been edging closer to a first-team return, the 24-year-old having smashed two goals for the Under-21s against Dundee in his first serious action of the season last month. If his worst fears are confirmed, though, it will be a hammer blow for the player who had been hoping to stake his claim for involvement in the Jambos’ UEFA Cup second round clash against Bordeaux, the Gorgie outfit jetting out to France on Wednesday ahead of Thursday night’s showdown in the Parc de Lescure.

"Gary Wales came into Tynecastle at the end of last week complaining of a sore foot," said boss Craig Levein.

"He missed the start of the season with a stress fracture and this is now the same kind of pain in the same area of his other foot.

"He has been training and playing in the Under-21s in recent weeks and if this is the same trouble which kept him out over the summer, it will be quite unbelievable."

He added: "We will wait to see what the scans show but it will be incredible if it is the same sort of injury."

Full-back Robbie Neilson was forced out of Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Livingston with an ankle
