G Morton........4 Hearts...............3
A GLORY night for Greenock Morton was capped by personal triumphs for Peter Duffield and Kevin Twaddle, who both scored doubles to give the first division side a confidence-boosting victory over a club who came so close to taking last season's premier title.
An excellent goalkeeping display from veteran Doug Wylie and many touches of midfield mastery from Alan Blaikie and Maurice George also helped to keep at bay a Hearts side that was a mixture of fringe players and first-team regulars.
The homesters opened the scoring after 19 minutes when Duffield took a Twaddle pass in his stride to beat goalkeeper Myles Hogarth.
Two minutes later, however, Hearts equalised when Stefano Salvatore thumped a drive past Wylie.
Minutes later, Duffield touched home a net-bound Harry Curran shot and, shorty afterwards, Twaddle netted at the second attempt after a brilliant block from Hogarth.
Just before the interval, the Maroons reduced the deficit through trialist Baldo. On the resumption, Hearts pulled level when Quitongo brilliantly sent Baldo clear to leave Wylie spectating with a fierce volley.
However, there was no stopping the home side, and 13 minutes from time Twaddle took a Paul Blair cross on the turn to make it game, set and match for the Cappielow men.
