Jefferies thought Wim was the boss of bosses

JIM JEFFERIES was stunned to be named Manager of the Year - because he was convinced Wim Jansen would win it.

It was the perfect boost for the Jambos gaffer ahead of the final but he admitted he was amazed to get the nod ahead of the Celtic coach.

The judging panel - made up of writers and broadcasters - rewarded Jeff for his work on a shoestring.

He confessed: "This is quite a surprise.

Obviously you would look at Wim, who has won two trophies in his first season, and think he would be a foregone conclusion to win.

"People appreciate the job I've done here in the last few years with limited resources.

"Of course, this means a lot to me as it's a recognition of the job I've done.

"But I'd give every manager a prize because I've so much respect for the job they do.

"This is a tough job as so many people have opinions, but we've got to stick to what we believe is right.

"Mind you, I'd happily swap this award if it meant winning the Scottish Cup final!"

Jefferies - who saw Paul Ritchie named Young Player of the Year - praised last year's winner Walter Smith.

Privilege Jefferies said: "You can't argue with Walter's record and some of the players he has brought to Scottish foot ball have enhanced our game.

"It's a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Walter.

I have great respect for him.

"He has never changed.

The guy who's walking out of the job after the cup final is the same guy who walked into it.

"I can't help but look back on a Reserve League Cup final in 1972 when I was skipper of Hearts and we beat Dundee United over two legs.

"I think the second leg at Tynecastle eventually went to penalties - and Walter was United captain at that time.

"I wish him all the best in whatever he does."

Jefferies has built a squad for Pounds 800,000 - small change to the Old Firm.

Yet Hearts have pushed Celtic and Rang ers all the way this season.

They've now finished in the top four in the Premier for the last two years and have reached three cup finals.

Jeff added: "The most im portant thing for me is not to stand still.

I learned at Falkirk if you do that you're left in danger of going backwards.

"What we need now is qual ity players to come in and as sist players such as Gary Naysmith, Neil McCann and Colin Cameron as it would help raise their game."
