Six of Hearts take the final trick and the pot

22 Jan 1991

HEARTS are the Tennents sixes champions for this season and no-one can doubt that they deserved to lift the trophy last night.

In a tournament which set the goal-scoring records with a total of 143 Hearts led the way with 28.

In addition their little striker John Colquhoun tied with Graham Harvey of Airdrie as top scorer on eight.

Hearts can expect a windfall for two days' work.

They will receive £16,000 for winning the competition, around £1800 for their scoring exploits, and another sum as they did not have anyone sent to the sin bin.

In the final they defeated Motherwell 5-3 with John Colquhoun and Tosh McKinlay each scoring a double.

There is no doubt Motherwell also played a handsome part in the entertainment for the sell-out audience.

In particular Davie Cooper teased and tantalised, not least in the semi-final, when his hat-trick helped to a 5-3 win over Lanarkshire rivals Airdrie.

Hearts, meanwhile, in the semi-final were pushed by St Johnstone for, after a 3-3 draw, they progressed only by winning 5-4 on penalties.

Results:

Section 1 -- Celtic 0, Motherwell 3; Dundee United 2, Hibs 4.

Section 2 -- Aberdeen 2, Dunfermline 3; St Mirren 1, Hearts 6.

Semi-finals -- Motherwell 5, Airdrie 3; Hearts 3, St Johnstone 3 (Hearts won 5-4 on penalties).

Final -- Motherwell 2, Hearts 5.
