Hibs 1, Hearts 2, August 25, 1984"Hearts supporters moved onto the field and the police were really busy. It was hard for the players to concentrate" BOTH teams were minus big names for the first derby of the season. Hibs centre-forward Willie Irvine was counted out with an ankle injury. Hearts, already deprived of Gary Mackay and Kenny Black, also lost the services of Willie Johnston, so Donald Park was drafted into the midfield. Hibs goalkeeper Alan Rough required attention before the match even started, presumably having been struck by a missile from the Hearts end. The upshot was a chat between referee Andrew Waddell and police officers who kept watch on the trouble spot. Brian Rice was hurt in a clash with Dave Bowman and Jimmy Bone and required lengthy treatment. In the first five minutes, Craig Levein was also cautioned for a foul on Bobby Thomson as both sides made stuttering starts. Thankfully, the game began eventually and it was Hearts who provided the first touch of promise through Robertson and Bone, who combined smoothly for Levein to head wide. A little later Rough gathered a 25-yarder from Robertson inside his left-hand post. But the emphasis was still on the physical until Hibs nearly snatched a goal in 17 minutes. Alan Sneddon pushed a through ball to Paul Kane whose low right-foot shot flew only inches past. George Cowie brought off a handy clearance for Hearts as he swept the ball from John Brogan's feet as the Hibs newcomer chased a clever pass from Rice. Hibs were showing some improvement and Thomson could have scored with a header from a lob by Kevin McKee. Henry Smith left his line and was beaten as the ball soared over the bar. Hibs went ahead in 44 minutes. Some Hearts supporters moved onto the field and the police were really busy trying to contain the fans. Ralph Callachan went off in the early minutes of the second half, presumably with an injury and Willie Jamieson took his place with Thomson stepping back into the midfield. With 52 minutes played, Hearts grabbed an equaliser. Sandy Jardine punted a long clearance some 50 yards and it looked as if the ball would bounce straight through to Rough. Another supporter scaled the fence only to be led away by police after McNamara had words with the offender. Sadly, the game was suffering from the general atmosphere and Thomson was booked for a body-check on Walter Kidd – the fifth caution of the game. Brogan had a chance to put Hibs in front again when Smith sent a clearance to his feet. Hearts sent on Derek O'Connor, above, for Alex MacDonald and, with the game seemingly heading for stalemate, the substitute scored to send the Hearts fans in the 16,724 crowd into a frenzy. Hibs: Rough, McKee, Schaedler, Sneddon, Rae, McNamara, Callachan (Jamieson), Jamieson, Brogan, Kane, Rice, Thomson. Hearts: Smith, Kidd, Cowie, Jardine, Macdonald, Levein, Bowman, Park, Bone, Robertson, MacDonald (O'Connor). Taken from the Scotsman |
