Decimal points are out of date

IT SEEMS incongruous that at a time when tight defensive play is being deployed, a team scoring 90 goals (Hearts) should be deprived of the Scottish League championship by a side (Kilmarnock) who have netted only 62 times in their 34 games. It does not make sense, nor does the fact that 1-25th of a goal should be the deciding margin.
Nothing can be done this season and Kilmarnock have won the title fairly and with an admirable final flourish, but the system of goal average deciding such a long trek seems ludicrous. It is out of date.

It is, in fact, almost as bad as the odd ruling which allows clubs in the European Cup-winners' Cup to toss a coin to decide the winner after having played three games. Much better by far to have the teams in the European event play on, as in golf, to the first decisive goal. And should the third game last three hours, well, that would be unfortunate for the Press and the players, but intensely enthralling for the spectators who had the time to spare.

But to return to the fractions in the Scottish League. It is also bad business to decide a needle-edged championship in such a manner.

A play-off, in the case of Kilmarnock and Hearts, would probably have attracted a near-100,000 gate at, say, Hampden and neither club are sufficiently affluent to turn down such a lucrative proposition.
