A scientific explanation by 'Victor Meldrew'

Back to Nerday Games

There is a scientific explanation for this rather curious phenomenon.

Hearts Fans Having a nippie sweetie
New Year is a time when people like to celebrate, seeing friends and family. Understandably a wee bit too much is drunk during such festivities, and hangovers ensue.

Hearts Fans Having Fun

It is therefore natural that your average Jambo is nursing one hell of a hangover at the Ne'ers day game and the Hearts end is naturally a wee bit subdued at such time.

However, your average Hibby is a loner, an odious creature with no friends and disowned by his family. He naturally is tucked up in bed by 9 o'clock on 31st December, and as fit as a fiddle for the game, which is probably the biggest occasion in his miserable and unfulfilled little life. He and those like him are therefore 100% ready to cheer on his team from the word go - hence their team's better performances.

Of course, as the game wears on, the Jambos' spirits are restored and by the end, everything is back on track. Hence Hibernian being able to f*** things up having been 4-2 up in injury time.

Ah but you might ask, if this theory is correct, how have HMFC won so many Ne'ers day games. The answer is simple: there is one factor that we have as yet overlooked. That is.................

Hibs are sh**e.
