ELVIS: WE PUT OUR BACKS INTO IT

EURO CHAMPIONSHIP
By Gordon Waddell

STEVEN PRESSLEY last night piled praise on Scotland's defence after barely kicking a ball in anger all afternoon.

The Hearts stopper was a virtual spectator alongside skipper Davie Weir for long spells as Scotland's strikers got their shooting boots on and the midfield trio swarmed around the park in front of them.

But Elvis insists the stoppers still have to take pride in their work - and the last thing they needed was a black mark on their clean sheet ahead of what he knows will be a tougher shift against Lithuania in Kaunas in midweek.

He said: "Concentration is the key in these type of games.

"We knew they wouldn't have too many chances or corners and free-kicks in dangerous areas but you can still be vulnerable if you let your guard down.

"And the second half proved that if you don't score against them it can become really frustrating.

"So it was good we got the job done so comprehensively in the first.

"Everyone worked hard to ensure we started with a win.

"It was potentially difficult, maybe not in terms of us losing the game but more in breaking them down.

"And when we got five up? It's the sign of a good team that you don't switch off. We showed we were cable of that.

"And we showed we were capable of setting the tempo right from the start as well.

"The gaffer was pleased we'd done the job we set out to do and now we need to keep that level up for Wednesday."
