Hearts put children first

THE Hearts Education and Community Trust is designed to address the issues of anti-social behaviour and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle amongst Edinburgh's children.

In partnership with Edinburgh City Council, the club is aiming to promote positive social behaviour and teach children to be responsible whilst also educating them on adopting positive attitudes towards health and sport, especially football.

Campbell Ogilvie, Hearts' general secretary and operations director, said: "This is one of the most exciting projects ever to take place in the Capital and we aspire to educate tens of thousands of children.

"We aim to use Hearts players as role models, promote football development in schools, create a programme of events aimed at combating the problem of anti-social behaviour and help children develop a healthy eating programme."

Hearts captain Steven Pressley added: "It doesn't matter which club you support or even if you don't like football, this is for everyone. The Hearts players are excited to get involved with schools across the city."

The programme was launched at the city's Pirniehall and St David's Primary, and the pupils are excited at being able to learn directly from their heroes.

Bradley Thompson said: "Although I'm a Rangers supporter I still like Hearts too, and I think it's great that they are showing children what to eat and tricks and skills about football. I want to learn a Ronaldinho step-over.

Daniel Mitchell, said: "I look up to Craig Gordon and I'm looking forward to picking up tips on diet and finding out the kind of things that footballers eat.

Kaitlin Dodge, added: "I'm hoping to learn more about football, about how to stay healthy and exercise."
