When the whistle sounded, therefore, the Hearts, amid extraordinary excitement, secured possession of the much-coveted trophy. The winners were loudly cheered, most of the players being carried shoulder-high to the pavilion.

The cheering which followed this point was something terrific. Hats, sticks, and handkerchiefs were thrown wildly in the air. Soon after the whistle blew, leaving Hearts winners of one of the best games ever seen in a final. Overall SC Hearts 3 Hibs 5.The victory, it might be said, was popular in every sense of the word. Those who witnessed the demonstration following upon the third point will not readily forget it. ..it is satisfactory to note that everything passed off without a single hitch.

The long wait is over for Heart of Midlothian. For 48 years they have striven to emulate the occasion of 1906, when the Scottish Cup was won at Ibrox. They defeated Motherwell by 4 goals to 2 at Hampden Stadium. Glasgow, on Saturday, and let it be said right away that victory was merited.

Something like sixty thousand spectators, 11 of them wearing red and yellow, saw Heart of Midlothian prove themselves Scotland's most accomplished football team at Hampden Park on Saturday. That they won the Scottish League Cup in the process was as much of a punctilious formality as the presentation ceremony which followed the game.

The wonder of this very fine League Cup final, in which Hearts won the trophy for the fourth time in nine years, is that so many people so much further away than a very good referee, Mr. T. Wharton, could see so much better than he. And so according to where their sympathies lay they argue bitterly that it was a goal or not a goal when Beattie headed that ball over the line in the last minute apparently to give Kilmarnock an equalising goal.

THIS was the game in which Hearts finally gave up their addiction to lost causes. An aversion to bagging the game's glittering prizes, which has haunted the Edinburgh club since 1962, ended against Rangers at ten to five on Saturday with a momentous change of fortune.
